Ensemble Singing
For Musical Theatre
Our ensemble singing class is for all students ages 10-18 who want to learn more about singing for musical theatre. Whether performing in a lead role or the ensemble, actors all have to sing as part of a group at some point during a musical production. This class focuses on the basics of healthy voice production for theatre, including breathing techniques, healthy tone production, and classical vs. belting techniques in a supportive group environment. Beyond individual singing technique, we will also focus on how to listen to the group and sing responsively, attending to both balance and blend of the whole group. We will focus on ensemble pieces from various styles of familiar shows, and will incorporate some basic music reading as part of our rehearsal process. This class will conclude with a concert performance for an invited audience.

Intro to Acting
Acting Improv
Our Into to Acting course is for students ages 9-13 who are new to the craft of acting. The student will develop their own style as we explore the various combinations of techniques designed to allow them to fully explore the who, what, why, and where. Development of these critical skills will allow the student to really begin to understand the meaning of “keeping it real!” For those that can commit, there will be a scene showcase toward the end of the session.
Our advanced acting class is for students ages 14-18 with some theater and acting background. The class will focus on more advanced theater games and improvisation exercises. The class time will be split between technique building exercises and will allow the student to develop more concentrated listening and truthful responsive skills. We will then explore some monologue work and advanced scene study and interpretation. This class will conclude with a presentation of scenes and improv for an invited audience.
Comedy Improv
Acting for Adults
Our Comedy Improv class for adults is designed to bring out your creative best. Students will learn time proven comedy improv techniques, which bring about confidence, creativity, discovery of hidden talents, comedic timing, character development, innovation, and collaboration. Based on the Yes, And approach, (Yes, I’m listening, And I’m going to build on your idea!), students will learn to work together in a respectful way, knowing that it always about the “scene” and never about the individual. This class will help students think quickly on their feet, which can turn any idea into comedy gold. Students are encouraged to pull out all of the “stops” and let go. Amazing things happen when we allow ourselves to fully open up creatively. The class will conclude with a performance and can very well lead to the creation of our Grove Passage Comedy Improv Troupe!
Our Acting Improvisation workshop for adults is designed to ease the fear of improv and theater games by allowing the student to develop the skills in a really fun, supportive atmosphere. We have seen so many students enter the program not really sure of what to expect of themselves or the class and then decide they had to move on to our advanced classes. We start out working on very basic improv games and theater exercises before we move into more advanced techniques designed to allow the student to fully explore their imagination and creativity. These classes help students to think more quickly on their feet, and to become a better actor, listener, communicator, collaborator, and decision maker. It builds tremendous confidence as well! These skills will serve you well not only on stage but in most any part of your life!
